Enliven’s Abingdon Village offers a wonderful lifestyle opportunity in the heart of St John’s Hill.
Abingdon Retirement Village offers old-world English country charm, right in the centre of Whanganui.
Abingdon’s attractive and freshly renovated one-bedroom villas are set on picturesque grounds, nestled amongst native trees and beautiful sunny gardens overlooking the Whanganui township.
The 14 villas at Abingdon Village surround the historic Abingdon House, designed by famous Kiwi architect James Walter Chapman-Taylor.
The house is now the village’s community centre and includes a shared dining room, shared lounge and guest accommodation. There are many social occasions and friendly card games enjoyed here!
Abingdon villas have been designed and constructed to provide comfortable, affordable and quality retirement living. If you value a vibrant, active and enjoyable retirement lifestyle, then Abingdon Village should be your first choice.
One of the best things about a move to Abingdon Village is that you can focus on enjoying your retirement while we take care of the rest. We’ll look after the property maintenance and gardening; we even offer meals and housekeeping services.
Of course, the amount we do is up to you. For example, if you’re a bit of a green thumb or enjoy pottering in the garden, you’re welcome to take care of the area around your villa. Many residents have created glorious gardens around their homes.

Abingdon Village residents say:
I have my own country cottage style home that is just the right size for me and I have decorated just how I want it. I have my own life, but also the security of knowing that our village coordinator is looking out for me if I need it.
Ted
I like the security here. The villas are self contained and we have everything here that we need. There’s nowhere else I’d want to be.
Pauline
I had spent a lot of energy trying to find the right place, then there was an open day at Abingdon and I went along. I quickly felt sure I was making the right decision to come here. The location, gardens and friendship – everything about Abingdon I like.
Angela
As you get older you don’t get out and about as much and you can get lonely, but moving here means there are people nearby and somebody’s always around. It’s a good arrangement here, you know someone can help if you need it but you also are left to yourself.
Joyce
I first came to Abingdon to visit friends and I was telling them that I could live in a place like this, so my friend told me to get on their waiting list. A couple of months later I got a call saying I could move in. I’ve never regretted it.
Ted
I’ve lived in Whanganui all my life. I have driven past Abingdon countless times but never really noticed the place because it’s enclosed by trees. When you drive in it opens out so beautifully. I like the layout, the sighting of the complex and the peacefulness of the place. It’s a wonderful setting, it really is.
Krina
I’ve got a lovely view. There are just 14 villas here so it’s peaceful – it’s what I’m used to. Living here also means there is less maintenance and gardening.
Isobel
I’ve got a little dog and she’s allowed to come with me. I wouldn’t be doing it if I couldn’t take my dog, so I’m very happy they allow pets.
Lyn
I’m enjoying it here. You get a lot of invitations to go to things at Kowhianui Home and Village which is really nice. I’m getting to know all the other residents, too. I really enjoy it.
